Rabbit allergy test: what to know

A rabbit allergy test helps compare your symptoms with sensitivity to rabbit proteins and guides practical treatment decisions. A clinician may use your history alongside a skin-prick test or blood test. Results need context: a positive result can show sensitisation, while symptoms and exposure determine whether rabbits are actually triggering a problem.

Rabbit allergens may come from dander, saliva, urine, or material carried on the fur. Testing may be considered when sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy watery eyes, wheezing, or skin symptoms repeatedly follow contact with a rabbit or its living area. A clinician will ask about timing, intensity, other animals, dust, and existing asthma before interpreting the result.

A negative result does not explain every cause of nasal or eye symptoms, and a positive result does not predict how severe a future reaction will be. Allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, pet allergy, and asthma can overlap, so the pattern of symptoms matters.

Keep a brief exposure diary: note contact with the rabbit, symptoms, how quickly they appeared, and whether symptoms improved away from the environment. Ask the testing clinic whether medicines such as antihistamines need to be paused; do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Reduce exposure to bedding, cages, and fabrics if they trigger symptoms, and wash hands after handling the animal.

Your clinician may suggest symptom treatment, environmental changes, or an allergy referral. If you have asthma, keep your reliever plan available and discuss rabbit exposure before visiting homes with rabbits.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms after exposure. These can indicate anaphylaxis. Prompt medical review is also sensible for repeated wheezing, night-time breathing symptoms, or eye swelling that affects vision.
