What should you know about pet hair allergy test?

Allergy symptoms are usually triggered by proteins in dander, saliva or urine rather than the hair itself. A clinician reviews your symptoms, timing and exposure alongside the result. A positive result shows sensitisation, but it must fit your real-life pattern before it is considered the explanation for your symptoms.

Testing may help distinguish pet allergy from allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis or sensitivity to house dust mite. It does not predict the exact severity of future symptoms or replace an assessment for asthma.

Tell the clinic about medicines, skin conditions and any previous severe allergic reaction. Until you have guidance, reduce exposure by keeping the animal out of the bedroom, washing hands after contact and cleaning fabrics where dander collects. Treatment may include avoidance measures or allergy medication selected for your symptoms.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading symptoms after exposure. These can signal anaphylaxis. Arrange a prompt medical review if wheezing, persistent night symptoms or exercise-related breathing difficulty is developing, because pet allergy can coexist with asthma.
