What should you know about persistent sinus pressure?

Pressure around the cheeks, forehead or eyes can occur when the nasal lining swells and mucus cannot drain normally. Sinusitis may also cause blocked nose, reduced smell, thick discharge, cough or fever. Chronic Sinusitis describes symptoms that remain or return over a prolonged period and may involve ongoing inflammation or nasal polyps. Migraine can cause facial pressure, but often brings throbbing pain, nausea, light sensitivity or sound sensitivity; nasal symptoms do not automatically prove a sinus cause.

Record where the pressure is felt, how it changes with bending forward, and whether congestion, discharge, fever, smell changes, headache or light sensitivity occur. Rest, fluids and saline nasal care may ease irritation. Avoid smoke and other nasal triggers. A clinician can inspect the nose, review the symptom pattern and decide whether treatment for Sinusitis, allergy or headache is appropriate. Do not use decongestant sprays beyond the product instructions, as overuse can worsen blockage.

Get urgent help for swelling or redness around an eye, vision change, severe headache with stiff neck, confusion, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Arrange a medical review for persistent one-sided pressure, recurrent episodes, high fever, severe pain, or symptoms that affect sleep or daily function.
