What should you know about multiple eruptive milia?

Milia develop when keratin, a protein found in the outer skin, becomes enclosed beneath the surface. They often look like smooth, pearly white or skin-coloured bumps. The eruptive form means many lesions appear over a relatively short period, sometimes on the face, eyelids, cheeks, or other areas. They are different from acne whiteheads because they are small cysts rather than blocked pores, and squeezing them can injure the skin or leave marks.

A clinician may identify milia by looking closely at their shape, colour, firmness, and distribution. A sudden widespread change, inflammation, or uncertainty about the diagnosis makes an in-person examination useful.

Use a gentle cleanser and avoid picking, piercing, or scraping the bumps. Choose non-irritating skincare and protect exposed skin from sun while any marks settle. If lesions persist, recur, or are numerous, a dermatologist can discuss options such as sterile extraction, curettage and cautery, or a prescribed topical retinoid. Treatment choice depends on the location, skin sensitivity, and whether the diagnosis is clear.

Arrange a dermatology review if the bumps are rapidly appearing, become red or tender, bleed, crust, affect vision, or do not resemble your previous milia. Seek prompt care for marked swelling around the eye, spreading redness, pus, fever, or significant pain, because those features can point to inflammation or infection rather than uncomplicated milia.
