A colposcope stays outside the vagina while the clinician uses magnification and light to inspect the cervix after placing a speculum. Solutions may be applied to make areas easier to see. A small sample may be taken if tissue needs closer examination; the device itself is not a treatment. “Mini” can describe a smaller or portable design, but the examination still depends on trained interpretation and the reason for referral.

Follow the clinic’s instructions and tell the team if you are pregnant, have an allergy, or take medicines that affect bleeding. It may help to avoid vaginal sex, tampons, and vaginal medicines shortly before the examination if your clinic advises this. Bring questions about the result and follow-up. You can ask for a smaller speculum, a pause, or an explanation before each step.

Light spotting or mild cramping can occur after a cervical examination or biopsy. Follow the discharge instructions about pads, activity, and sex. Contact the clinic if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or worsening, you develop fever, or there is unpleasant-smelling discharge.
