Milia on the face in adults

Adult milia can occur on previously normal skin or after inflammation, a scratch, a burn, or another disruption of the surface. They are often firm and pale, with no pus and little surrounding redness. New white bumps are not automatically milia: closed comedones, irritation, and other lesions can resemble them. A clinician can check the texture, pattern, and history before recommending treatment.

Keep the routine simple: cleanse gently, moisturise if the skin feels dry, and avoid repeatedly changing products. Do not dig at the bumps or use strong exfoliants to force them out. Review rich eye products, occlusive ointments, or recent procedures with a professional if the timing suggests a connection. For persistent adult milia, dermatology treatment may involve supervised extraction, curettage and cautery, or a carefully selected topical retinoid for appropriate skin areas.

Make an appointment when bumps persist, recur frequently, appear after a procedure, or are causing distress. Seek earlier review for bleeding, rapid change, pain, marked redness, or a non-healing crust. Facial swelling with breathing trouble is an emergency; swelling around the eye with vision change or severe pain needs urgent assessment.

Tell the clinician when the bumps began, any recent peel or injury, and the products used nearby. Ask whether the pattern fits milia, which option matches your skin, and how to prevent irritation while treating the area.
