What should you know about milia near mouth?

Milia develop when keratin is held beneath the outer skin. They commonly appear as smooth, pale beads and generally lack the swelling associated with inflamed acne. The mouth area has frequent contact with saliva, food, masks, shaving, and skincare, so irritation can make any bump more conspicuous. A clinician can compare the lesion with skin bumps and whiteheads that have a different cause.

A solitary, stable bump is often less urgent than one that is sore or changing, but appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Avoid treating a suspected milium with multiple active products at once, because irritation can obscure what is happening.

Clean the area gently, rinse away toothpaste or cosmetics, and use a simple moisturiser on surrounding skin if it feels dry. Keep exfoliating acids, scrubs, and retinoid products off the lips and mouth lining unless prescribed for that exact area. A dermatologist may remove a confirmed lesion using sterile extraction. Topical retinoids or curettage and cautery can be considered in selected situations, with instructions tailored to the site and your skin.

Have the area examined if a bump is painful, itchy, ulcerated, crusted, bleeding, or associated with persistent swelling. Seek timely care for spreading redness, pus, fever, or trouble opening the mouth. A clustered blister or a lesion that follows repeated irritation may need another diagnosis and a different plan.
