Can Milia Heal on Their Own?

Milia are small cysts rather than ordinary dirt or a spot that can be washed away. A lesion that is unchanged, firm, and not sore may be suitable for observation if its appearance is not troublesome. A similar-looking bump may follow a different course, so a persistent lesion should not be labelled milia from a photograph alone. Whiteheads are related to clogged pores and need a different assessment.

Cleanse normally, moisturise if the skin is dry, and avoid squeezing, needles, abrasive scrubs, or strong acids around the bumps. Take an occasional clear photo in consistent light if you want to notice change over time. If a lesion remains bothersome, a dermatologist can confirm it and discuss a topical retinoid or careful in-clinic removal with curettage and cautery.

Arrange a review when a bump persists and you are unsure of its identity, or when several new lesions appear. Seek prompt assessment if it becomes red, hot, swollen, painful, crusted, or starts bleeding. Rapid change or discharge is not a typical reason to simply continue observing.

Ask whether observation is reasonable for your lesion, what features would show that it is changing, and whether a treatment could irritate your skin. If you want removal, ask how the area will be protected from infection and marks.
