Milia Around Mouth: What to Know

Milia form when keratin is held under the outer skin layer, producing a smooth, firm bump. Around the mouth they may sit on the surrounding facial skin, near the corners, or along the upper lip border. Their pale colour can resemble a whitehead, while redness, scaling, or soreness may suggest irritation or another condition. A bump on the inner mouth lining is not typical facial milia and should be assessed separately.

Use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Avoid picking, comedone tools, gritty scrubs, and strong spot treatments around the mouth. Check whether a new toothpaste, lip balm, shaving product, or fragranced cream is causing stinging or a rash. Persistent milia can be removed by a trained professional with a sterile technique. For selected cases, a prescribed topical retinoid may help manage keratin build-up, but it can irritate the mouth area and must be used according to medical directions. Curettage and cautery may be discussed when a procedure is appropriate.

Seek an assessment for pain, pus, blisters, open skin, bleeding, marked scaling, rapid enlargement, or a lesion that keeps returning. Get prompt help for facial swelling with fever, rapidly spreading redness, trouble swallowing, or breathing difficulty. These features call for attention beyond routine milia care.

Ask whether the bump is facial skin milia or a lip or mouth lesion, which products might be aggravating it, and whether observation, medication, or removal is the most suitable option.
