Milia Around Eyes Treatment: What to Know

Milia are small keratin-filled cysts beneath the skin surface. Around the eyes they often look like tiny, pearly white bumps on the eyelid or beneath the eye. Their appearance can overlap with other skin or eyelid conditions, so diagnosis comes before treatment. The thin skin and nearby eye structures make strong acids, needles, extraction tools, and vigorous rubbing poor choices for self-treatment.

A clinician may recommend leaving a quiet, harmless lesion alone if it is not troubling you. For persistent or unwanted milia, a sterile opening followed by gentle extraction can be considered. Curettage and cautery may suit selected lesions, although treatment choice depends on depth, number, and distance from the eyelid margin. A topical retinoid can be prescribed for some cases, but it must be used exactly as directed and kept away from the eye itself. Use a mild cleanser, avoid picking, and tell the clinician about contact lenses, eczema, or products that irritate your skin.

Book an assessment when a bump is growing, painful, inflamed, crusted, bleeding, or unlike your other milia. Seek prompt medical care for sudden swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe pain, fever, or redness spreading across the face. These features may point to a problem needing different care.

Ask what confirms the diagnosis, whether observation is reasonable, how close the lesion is to the eyelid margin, and what aftercare will reduce irritation or rubbing.
