Short answer

Mild asthma attack symptoms include increasing wheeze, cough, chest tightness, or breathlessness that needs prompt action.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early change
A noticeable shift from usual breathing
First response
Stop, sit upright, follow the action plan
Emergency sign
Difficulty speaking or severe fatigue

Recognising a flare

Most people with asthma notice an attack as a change from their usual breathing: a tighter chest, repeated Cough, audible Wheezing, faster breathing, or difficulty keeping up with normal activity. Symptoms may follow a cold, smoke, dust, pollen, exercise, or an allergy. Early symptoms can worsen, so compare them with your personal action plan rather than relying on the word mild. A flare can happen even when asthma has been quiet for a while.

What to do promptly

Stop exertion, sit upright, stay as calm as possible, and use your prescribed reliever exactly as your action plan says. Move away from smoke or another known trigger. If symptoms do not improve as expected, contact urgent medical services. A clinician may sometimes recommend Nebuliser Treatment, but a nebuliser is not a substitute for emergency assessment when breathing is deteriorating.

Emergency warning signs

Call emergency services if you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak in full sentences, become exhausted, confused, faint, or drowsy, or notice blue or grey lips. Get urgent help when the reliever is not working, symptoms return quickly, or the episode is unlike your usual pattern. Do not wait for wheezing to become loud; severe narrowing can sometimes produce little air movement.

Questions to ask

What are my earliest warning signs? How many reliever doses should my plan allow? Which triggers should I avoid? When should I attend an emergency department, and should my daily treatment change after a flare?

Questions people ask

Can an asthma attack happen without obvious wheezing?

Yes. Increasing tightness or breathlessness may occur without a loud wheeze, especially when airflow is severely reduced.

What if the reliever does not help?

Follow your action plan and seek urgent or emergency help; do not keep waiting for symptoms to settle.
