What should you know about lump on my right neck?

A right-sided neck lump needs attention to its location, texture, duration, and associated symptoms, but it does not by itself identify cancer. Lymph nodes can enlarge while the body responds to infection, and skin irritation or a blocked gland can form a separate type of swelling.

The right side contains lymph nodes, muscles, salivary tissue, blood vessels, and the thyroid area. A tender lump after a sore throat, dental problem, ear infection, or skin irritation may reflect inflammation. A firm, fixed, enlarging, or unexplained mass needs clinical assessment. Neck lumps can occur with head and neck cancer, lymphoma, or thyroid cancer, but a lump is a presentation of those conditions rather than proof of any one diagnosis. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe illness. Seek prompt medical assessment for a persistent or enlarging lump, a hard or fixed mass, persistent hoarseness, blood in saliva, or a neck swelling accompanied by significant swallowing pain. These warning signs call for examination because the underlying cause cannot be judged safely from appearance alone.

Ask: Could this be a lymph node, thyroid-related swelling, salivary problem, or skin lesion? What features on examination matter most? Would an ultrasound or another test help? If a sample is recommended, how is it taken and what will it clarify? Ask how to monitor the lump and which change should bring you back sooner.
