What should you know about an itchy throat then cough?

An itch can begin when dust, smoke, dry air or nasal mucus touches sensitive throat tissue. Coughing follows as the body tries to clear it. Allergic rhinitis may cause sneezing, nasal blockage or drainage, while a common cold can bring congestion, fatigue and a changing cough. House dust mite allergy may be linked with bedrooms, bedding or cleaning. If the sequence starts soon after a particular food and is accompanied by hives, facial swelling, vomiting, hoarseness or breathing trouble, food allergy requires urgent attention. The sequence alone cannot identify the cause.

Move away from smoke, dust, fragrances and other obvious irritants. Sip water, keep the throat moist and consider saline nasal care when congestion or drainage is present. Avoid repeatedly scraping or clearing the throat, which can prolong irritation. Record the gap between itch and cough, whether mucus is present, and what happened beforehand. A clinician or pharmacist can help decide whether allergy medication is appropriate and can assess wheezing or recurrent symptoms.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, sudden tongue or throat swelling, faintness or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Arrange prompt assessment for wheezing, chest pain, coughing blood, trouble swallowing, high fever, dehydration or a cough that is becoming more severe. If episodes repeatedly follow exercise, cold air, a room or a meal, bring that pattern to a clinician.
