Short answer

Human allergy to dogs is an immune reaction to proteins in a dog's dander, saliva or urine, and symptoms can often be controlled by reducing exposure and using suitable treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What dog allergy means

Allergens can cling to fur, clothing, furniture and household dust, so symptoms may continue after a dog has left a room. Common reactions include sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, or itchy skin after contact. A dog allergy is different from irritation caused by dust or perfume, and allergy testing can help identify the trigger. Nasal symptoms may resemble Allergic Rhinitis, while eye symptoms may fit Allergic Conjunctivitis. The presence of symptoms after contact does not prove that a dog is the cause.

What you can do

Keep the dog out of the bedroom, wash hands after touching it, and change clothes if exposure has been prolonged. Clean surfaces and fabrics regularly, improve ventilation, and avoid allowing the dog onto beds or upholstered furniture. A clinician may suggest a non-drowsy antihistamine, a nasal spray, or an inhaler when appropriate; use these according to their directions. If symptoms are frequent, ask about allergy testing and an individual plan. People with asthma should discuss wheeze or chest tightness because pet exposure can aggravate Asthma.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice for persistent congestion, repeated wheezing, disturbed sleep, or symptoms that interfere with work or exercise. Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can signal a serious allergic reaction, including Anaphylaxis, and should not be managed by waiting at home.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your pattern suggests dog allergy, which test is suitable, whether medicines are safe with your other conditions, and how to protect your eyes and lungs during unavoidable exposure.

Questions people ask

Can a dog allergy happen even without touching a dog?

Yes. Allergens can remain on clothing, surfaces and household dust and may be carried into places where no dog is present.

Does dog allergy always cause asthma?

No. Some people have nose or eye symptoms only, but exposure can worsen wheezing or chest tightness in someone with asthma.
