How does loop excision of the cervix work?

The procedure is usually performed through the vagina while the cervix is viewed with a speculum. A colposcope magnifies the cervix and helps the clinician target the area that needs removal. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the cervix, and a fine heated loop cuts away the abnormal zone while sealing small blood vessels.

The sample is sent for examination to identify the cell changes and check whether the removed edges are clear. Loop excision is commonly used for cervical dysplasia. It is different from colposcopy, which examines the cervix and may take samples but does not remove the whole treatment area in the same way.

Tell the clinic if you may be pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, or take medicines that affect clotting. Follow the advice about pads, bathing, exercise, swimming, and vaginal sex while the cervix heals. Watery or blood-stained discharge can occur for a period after treatment; attend the follow-up appointment so the result and future cervical checks are clear.

Ask whether the findings change pregnancy planning. Removing cervical tissue can affect later pregnancy care, so your clinician can explain how your personal result may influence monitoring.

Contact your clinic or urgent care service for bleeding that is heavy or does not settle, severe pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, dizziness, or feeling faint. These symptoms may indicate bleeding or infection and should be assessed rather than managed alone at home.

Ask what cell changes were seen, how much tissue is likely to be removed, when the laboratory result will be ready, which symptoms are expected, and whether cone biopsy is an alternative for your situation.
