Home remedies to remove milia

Milia are firm, pearly bumps formed when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface. They often occur around the eyelids, cheeks, or nose and are different from whiteheads, although both can look pale. They are usually not caused by poor hygiene. Some appear after skin injury or irritation, while others develop without a clear trigger.

Wash gently, use a light non-comedogenic moisturiser, and avoid heavy ointments on areas where bumps form. Do not squeeze, scratch, use a needle, or apply strong acids near the eyes; these actions can introduce infection or leave a mark. Avoid rough exfoliating tools. If bumps persist or are bothersome, a clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss topical retinoids or careful removal with curettage and cautery. Do not use someone else’s prescription around the eyes.

Arrange an assessment if a bump is painful, red, draining, rapidly enlarging, or different from your other bumps. Seek eye care promptly for swelling, vision changes, or irritation of the eye itself. A new cluster after an injury or treatment also merits review.
