Home remedies for milia under the eye

Milia are tiny, firm cysts containing trapped keratin near the surface of the skin. Around the eye, they may look like whiteheads but are not ordinary acne spots. The eyelid and under-eye area are thin and easily irritated, so harsh scrubs, acids, needles, or essential oils can cause inflammation, a wound, or a lingering mark. A cluster of skin bumps can have other causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm milia.

Wash the area with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, using clean fingertips rather than a cloth. Pat dry and use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser if the skin feels dry. Do not pick, lance, or press the bumps, and keep eyelash tools and cosmetics clean. If the bumps remain, a clinician can discuss options such as topical retinoids or a carefully performed removal procedure; products intended for the face should not be placed inside the eye.

Arrange an assessment if a bump grows, bleeds, becomes painful, develops redness or discharge, affects vision, or does not resemble the other bumps.
