Gout in Filipino: meaning, symptoms and care

Gout is an inflammatory joint condition linked to urate, often called uric acid, crystals. A flare may bring sudden pain, redness, warmth, swelling and strong tenderness. It can affect the big toe, foot, ankle, knee, elbow or another joint. Some people develop firm lumps called tophi after repeated crystal buildup. A swollen painful joint can also be caused by infection, injury or another arthritis, so symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis. A clinician may examine the joint and arrange blood or joint-fluid tests when needed.

Rest the affected joint, elevate it and avoid pressure while the pain is active. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may help for short periods. Use medicines only as directed for your medical history, and check before taking anti-inflammatory tablets if you have kidney or stomach problems, are pregnant or use blood thinners. Do not stop a regular gout-prevention medicine without advice. A follow-up visit can review medicines, kidney health, hydration, alcohol, food choices and weight in context.

Ask for prompt assessment if this is your first attack or a joint becomes hot and swollen. Go to urgent care if you have fever, chills, spreading redness, a wound, drainage or feel seriously unwell, because infection can resemble gout and may need immediate treatment. Return for review when attacks repeat, movement remains limited or a lump persists.
