What should you know about fraxel for scars?

Fractional laser treatment is often considered for depressed acne scars, uneven texture, and some surgical or traumatic scars. It does not remove a scar in one session, and the response depends on the scar's depth, age, colour, location, and whether it is still changing. Raised or actively inflamed scars may need a different assessment before resurfacing.

A clinician examines the scar and nearby skin, asks about previous treatments and healing problems, and chooses the laser type and energy for your skin. Treatment can cause temporary redness, warmth, swelling, sensitivity, or darkening or lightening of the treated area.

Before treatment, discuss medicines, cold-sore history, eczema, keloid or thick-scar tendency, recent tanning, and any active infection. Follow the clinic's instructions about skincare and sun exposure. During recovery, use the recommended gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid picking or scrubbing, and protect the area from sunlight. Makeup and active skincare should wait until the treating clinician says the surface has recovered.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, swelling, redness, crusting, or oozing is worsening rather than settling, or if blisters, pus, fever, or spreading warmth develops. A new or changing scar, bleeding without a clear cause, or a scar that becomes very tender also deserves an examination.
