Features suggestive of adenomyosis

Short answer

Features suggestive of adenomyosis include heavy or painful periods, pelvic pain, and sometimes an enlarged or tender womb, but these features need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What these features can mean

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the muscle of the womb. It can make the womb more sensitive and may cause bleeding that is heavier or lasts longer than expected, cramps that interfere with daily activities, or aching between periods. Some people have no noticeable symptoms. These findings can overlap with fibroids, endometriosis, or other causes, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the condition.

What to do next

Arrange a gynaecology appointment if bleeding or pain is affecting work, sleep, sex, exercise, or family plans. Note when symptoms begin, how long bleeding lasts, whether you pass clots, and which pain medicines help. An examination and imaging may help assess the womb; a clinician can discuss options such as a hormonal coil or other treatments based on symptoms and pregnancy plans.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that is soaking through protection repeatedly, faintness, severe worsening pelvic pain, or breathlessness. Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding after menopause, bleeding between periods, or pain with fever. Heavy or painful periods are symptoms to assess, not proof of adenomyosis.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms fit adenomyosis or another condition? What examination or scan is appropriate? How might treatment affect bleeding, pain, fertility, or contraception? What should I do if symptoms suddenly worsen?

Questions people ask

Do these symptoms confirm adenomyosis?

No. Similar symptoms can occur with other womb or pelvic conditions, so assessment is needed.

Can adenomyosis occur without obvious symptoms?

Yes. Some people have adenomyosis found during assessment for another reason without clear symptoms.
