Features suggestive of adenomyosis

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the muscle of the womb. It can make the womb more sensitive and may cause bleeding that is heavier or lasts longer than expected, cramps that interfere with daily activities, or aching between periods. Some people have no noticeable symptoms. These findings can overlap with fibroids, endometriosis, or other causes, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the condition.

Arrange a gynaecology appointment if bleeding or pain is affecting work, sleep, sex, exercise, or family plans. Note when symptoms begin, how long bleeding lasts, whether you pass clots, and which pain medicines help. An examination and imaging may help assess the womb; a clinician can discuss options such as a hormonal coil or other treatments based on symptoms and pregnancy plans.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that is soaking through protection repeatedly, faintness, severe worsening pelvic pain, or breathlessness. Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding after menopause, bleeding between periods, or pain with fever. Heavy or painful periods are symptoms to assess, not proof of adenomyosis.
