What should you know about exercise induced asthma?

Short answer
Exercise induced asthma causes temporary airway narrowing during or after activity, leading to cough, wheezing, chest tightness, or breathlessness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical timing
- During exercise or shortly after stopping
- Common symptoms
- Cough, wheezing, chest tightness, or breathlessness
What it means
Fast breathing during exercise can cool and dry the airways. In some people, this irritates airway muscles and makes them tighten. Symptoms may begin while exercising or soon after stopping, especially with cold, dry air, pollution, or a recent respiratory infection. Exercise symptoms can occur with asthma and do not by themselves confirm the diagnosis.
A clinician may ask about the activity, timing, recovery, allergies, and symptoms at rest. They may check breathing and consider lung-function testing. Allergic Rhinitis and House Dust Mite Allergy can coexist with airway symptoms, while ongoing Cough may need a separate assessment.
What you can do
Pause when symptoms start and move to a comfortable place. Use any prescribed reliever exactly as directed, and keep it available during exercise. A gradual warm-up, covering the mouth and nose in cold air, and avoiding known triggers may help. Do not push through worsening wheeze or chest tightness.
Arrange a review if symptoms recur, limit activity, happen at rest, or require frequent reliever use. An asthma plan can clarify which medicine to use, how to adjust activity, and whether a Nebuliser Treatment is appropriate in an urgent setting.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, inability to speak comfortably, blue or grey lips, marked exhaustion, confusion, or symptoms that do not improve with the prescribed rescue plan. Stop exercising and do not drive yourself if breathing is severely affected.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit asthma, whether you need breathing tests, which activities and environments are safest, and what to do if your reliever does not help.
