Ear ache and sinus pressure: what to know

Swelling in the nose and sinus passages can interfere with pressure equalisation between the nose, throat, and middle ear. A cold or sinusitis may therefore cause fullness, popping, reduced hearing, facial tenderness, and ear discomfort together. Chronic sinusitis can produce symptoms that keep returning or continue over time. Migraine can also cause facial pressure or ear sensitivity without blocked sinuses. The location of pressure, nasal discharge, headache pattern, tooth pain, and changes with bending forward help distinguish these possibilities.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke. Saline nasal rinsing may help some people when performed with safe, prepared water and clean equipment. A pharmacist can advise on pain relief or a short-term nasal treatment after considering your health history and other medicines. Avoid forceful ear popping and do not insert objects into the ear. If symptoms are recurring, a clinician can look for allergy, nasal inflammation, or another source rather than treating pressure alone.

Seek urgent help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, a severe unusual headache, confusion, stiff neck, facial weakness, sudden hearing loss, or severe dizziness. Arrange medical review when pressure or pain is worsening, persistent, one-sided, or accompanied by high fever, ear discharge, or significant hearing reduction. Assessment may include examining the ears, nose, throat, and face.
