Does common cold cause itchy throat?

Cold viruses can inflame the lining of the nose and throat. Mucus moving down the back of the throat may add a tickling or scratchy sensation, especially when you lie down. You may also have sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, cough, or mild throat discomfort. An itchy throat can occur with other causes too, including allergies, dry air, or irritation from smoke, so the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Sip warm or cool fluids according to what feels soothing, and consider warm water with honey for adults and children old enough to have honey. Use a humidifier or breathe in gentle bathroom steam, avoid smoke, and rest your voice. Saline nasal spray can help loosen mucus and reduce drainage. Follow label directions before using any cold medicine, particularly for children, pregnancy, or existing medical conditions.

Arrange medical advice if the throat pain becomes severe, swallowing is difficult, symptoms keep worsening, or you cannot keep fluids down. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, or marked drowsiness. A clinician can assess symptoms that do not settle as the cold improves or that suggest another cause.
