Cold symptoms with an itchy throat: what to know

A common cold can inflame the throat and cause a tickle, blocked nose, cough or mild discomfort. Allergic rhinitis more often brings repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes and symptoms linked to pollen, dust or animals. Dry air, smoke, strong scents and mouth breathing can irritate the throat without infection. An itchy throat after eating can be an early sign of food allergy, especially if it comes with lip or tongue swelling, hives, vomiting or breathing difficulty. The symptom does not identify its cause on its own.

Think about timing, exposures, nasal symptoms, cough, swallowing difficulty and whether symptoms follow a particular food or medicine.

Sip warm or cool fluids, use a humidified room, avoid smoke and rest your voice. Saline nasal rinsing may reduce material draining into the throat when congestion is present. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication when sneezing and itchy eyes point to an allergic trigger. Do not test a suspected food allergy by eating the food again, and do not share medicines prescribed for someone else.

Call emergency services for throat itching with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness or widespread hives after food or medicine. Seek prompt medical advice for inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe one-sided throat pain, dehydration or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
