Digital colposcope: what to know

During colposcopy, a speculum gently holds the vaginal walls apart while the clinician views the cervix through or beside the device. The camera does not enter the cervix. Magnification and lighting can make areas that need closer inspection easier to see, and images may be displayed for the clinical team and discussed with you.

The clinician may apply solutions that temporarily change the appearance of cervical tissue. If an area looks unusual, they may take a small biopsy. The device itself does not diagnose cancer; tissue testing and the overall examination determine what the findings mean.

Follow the clinic's instructions and tell the team if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, or have allergies. Ask whether to avoid vaginal medicines, sex, or tampons beforehand. During the examination, describe discomfort and ask for a pause if needed. If a biopsy is taken, use the aftercare advice provided and arrange follow-up for results.

After a biopsy, light spotting or mild cramping can occur. Contact the clinic for bleeding that is heavy or increasing, severe pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, or feeling unwell. Before the appointment, seek advice if you have unexpected bleeding or possible pregnancy so the timing and procedure can be reviewed.
