What should you know about dexamethasone for flu?

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that changes the body’s inflammatory response. Flu is caused by a virus, so dexamethasone does not remove the virus or replace antiviral treatment when that is appropriate. A clinician may consider it for a separate inflammatory problem, such as a flare of asthma, but taking it without advice can mask worsening infection or cause side effects such as mood changes, stomach irritation and disturbed sleep.

Cough, chest tightness or wheezing can have several causes. If breathing symptoms accompany flu, assessment matters because treatment may need to address the airways rather than the viral illness itself.

Rest, drink fluids, and use suitable symptom relief according to the label and your clinician’s advice. Do not start leftover dexamethasone, share tablets, or stop a prescribed course suddenly without checking how it should be changed. Tell the clinician about diabetes, stomach ulcers, immune problems, pregnancy, and every medicine you take.

If you have asthma or repeated chest symptoms, arrange a clinical review. A nebuliser treatment may be considered in selected breathing problems, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or chest pain. Contact a clinician promptly if fever or cough is worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, or you are becoming unusually weak. People with long-term lung disease, reduced immunity, or other significant health conditions may need earlier advice.

Ask what problem dexamethasone is intended to treat, whether an antiviral or inhaled treatment is more suitable, how to take it safely, and which warning symptoms should prompt reassessment.
