Dengue fever incubation period

The incubation period is the time between infection and the first symptoms. During this interval, a person may feel well and may not know a mosquito transmitted the virus. Once illness starts, fever can be accompanied by chills, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea or a rash. The timing is a clue rather than a diagnosis, because other infections can follow a similar pattern and some infected people have few or no symptoms.

Note the dates and places of mosquito exposure, then watch for fever and changes in how you feel over the following days. Drink fluids and rest if symptoms develop. Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician says they are suitable, as bleeding can be a concern in dengue. Prevent further mosquito bites with repellent, covered skin and screens, and arrange a GP Consultation if illness appears.

Seek urgent medical care for severe belly pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, black stools, unusual sleepiness or agitation, faintness, breathing trouble, or very little urine. Do not assume risk has passed when the fever settles; warning signs can emerge around that point. A clinician can advise whether testing, repeat review or fluid support is needed.
