Coughing up blood and stress: what to know

Short answer
Stress can make coughing feel worse, but coughing up blood needs medical assessment because bleeding may come from the airways or lungs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What coughing up blood may mean
Blood mixed with mucus can follow irritation from forceful coughing, an infection such as pneumonia, or a long-term airway condition such as bronchiectasis. More serious causes include a blood clot in the lung, tuberculosis, or lung cancer. Stress can increase muscle tension, rapid breathing, and awareness of symptoms, but it does not establish the cause of blood. A clinician may ask about the colour and amount, chest pain, breathlessness, fever, smoking, recent travel, and medicines that affect clotting.
What to do now
Stop strenuous activity and sit upright. Note when the bleeding began, whether it was streaked through mucus or more substantial, and whether it has happened before. Do not smoke, and do not take a cough suppressant or change prescribed medicines without professional advice. Arrange prompt medical advice even if the blood stops, particularly when there is fever, a persistent cough, weight loss, or a known lung condition.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help immediately for more than small streaks of blood, repeated bleeding, trouble breathing, chest or upper-back pain, faintness, confusion, blue lips, or a fast heartbeat. Do not drive yourself if you feel weak or breathless. These warning signs require assessment for a serious airway or lung problem; anxiety should not delay care.
Questions to ask
Ask what may be causing the bleeding, whether you need a chest examination or imaging, and which symptoms should trigger emergency care. Tell the clinician about stress, sleep changes, smoking, recent infections, travel, and every medicine or supplement you take.

Questions people ask
Can stress alone explain blood in phlegm?
Stress can amplify coughing and the sensation of breathlessness, but visible blood still needs a medical explanation.
Should I wait to see if it happens again?
No. Arrange prompt advice, and seek emergency help for breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, or repeated or heavier bleeding.
