Common asthma triggers

Short answer
Common asthma triggers include viral infections, allergens, smoke, air pollution, cold air, exercise, stress and strong smells, although triggers differ between people.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible triggers
- Smoke, allergens, infections, cold air, exercise and strong smells.
- Track
- Record exposure, setting, activity and symptom timing.
- Urgent concern
- Severe breathing difficulty or poor reliever response needs urgent help.
Why triggers cause symptoms
In asthma, sensitive airways can narrow, swell and produce extra mucus after exposure to a trigger. This may lead to Cough, Wheezing or Chest Tightness. Allergens such as house dust mites and pollen can contribute, while smoke, perfumes, cleaning fumes, cold air and respiratory infections may irritate the airways without being an allergy.
A trigger is not always the same as the underlying condition. Keep a simple record of the setting, activity, exposure and symptoms so patterns can be discussed with a clinician.
Reducing exposure and preparing
Use your asthma action plan, take preventer treatment as prescribed and keep your reliever available. Avoid tobacco smoke and improve ventilation when using sprays or strong cleaning products. If cold air or exercise brings symptoms, ask about a safe warm-up and whether your plan needs adjustment. Treating Allergic Rhinitis or House Dust Mite Allergy may help when allergies are part of the pattern.
Do not stop a preventer because you feel well without discussing it. A Nebuliser Treatment may be used in urgent care, but it is not a substitute for an agreed day-to-day plan.
When to seek care
Use urgent help if breathing is very difficult, you cannot speak comfortably, lips look blue or grey, you become drowsy or confused, or your reliever is not helping as directed. Seek review for frequent night symptoms, increasing reliever use, or symptoms that limit ordinary activity. A severe flare can worsen quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how to identify your personal triggers, whether your inhaler technique is effective, when to use each inhaler, and what your action plan says about worsening symptoms. Bring your trigger notes and mention work, home, exercise and seasonal patterns.
