What should you know about cause of falling hair after giving birth?

Short answer
Hair shedding after giving birth often reflects a temporary hair-cycle shift caused by pregnancy and hormonal changes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why postpartum shedding happens
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can keep more hairs in the growing phase. After delivery, many of those hairs move into a resting phase and then shed together, making hair seem to fall heavily during washing or brushing. This pattern is called telogen effluvium. It usually affects the whole scalp rather than creating smooth bald patches. Blood loss, thyroid problems, low iron, stress, poor nutrition, and illness around delivery can also worsen shedding. A clinician can separate postpartum shedding from female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, scalp ringworm, or traction alopecia by examining the scalp and hair pattern.
Ways to protect your hair
Use a gentle shampoo, avoid tight braids and repeated heat styling, and detangle with care. Eat regular nourishing meals and discuss supplements with a clinician, particularly while breastfeeding; excessive doses can be harmful. Note whether the shedding is diffuse or patchy and whether the scalp is itchy, painful, or scaly. Treatment is directed at an identified deficiency or scalp condition rather than the shedding alone. Do not start finasteride treatment without specialist advice, especially during breastfeeding or if pregnancy is possible.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if loss forms round patches, the scalp is inflamed or scaly, hair breaks close to the scalp, or shedding continues without easing. Seek prompt care for severe fatigue, palpitations, fainting, or other symptoms suggesting anaemia or thyroid disturbance. A clinician can check the scalp and decide whether blood tests or a dermatology referral would help.
Questions for your doctor
Does this look like telogen effluvium or another type of hair loss? Could iron, thyroid, nutrition, or delivery-related illness be involved? Which products and supplements are suitable while breastfeeding? When should regrowth be reviewed?

Questions people ask
Is postpartum hair shedding permanent?
Postpartum shedding is often temporary, but another condition can affect regrowth and should be assessed when the pattern is patchy or persistent.
Can breastfeeding cause hair loss?
The main driver is usually the pregnancy and post-delivery hair-cycle change; nutrition, sleep, illness, and thyroid health may also influence shedding.
