Bi means two, basal refers to the lower parts of the lungs, and pneumonia describes inflamed lung tissue. The phrase describes location; it does not by itself identify the germ or show how severe the illness is. A clinician combines the report with breathing rate, oxygen level, examination findings and the person's medical history.

Causes can include viruses such as influenza or COVID-19, bacteria, or less common organisms. Cough, fever, chills and coughing up phlegm can occur, but symptoms vary. Other illnesses can resemble pneumonia, so the report should be interpreted in context.
