Ayurvedic remedies for allergic rhinitis

Nasal oils, herbal powders and oral mixtures vary in composition and can irritate the nose or interact with medicines. Discuss the exact preparation with a pharmacist or clinician, and continue any recommended nasal spray or antihistamine unless advised otherwise.

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation inside the nose after exposure to an allergen. It commonly presents with repeated sneezing, a runny or blocked nose and itching of the nose, throat or eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis may occur alongside it, and asthma may present with cough, wheeze or chest tightness.

Dust mites, pollen, mould and animal allergens are possible triggers. Thick discoloured mucus, facial pain, fever or symptoms mainly on one side may suggest another problem, including sinusitis, rather than an uncomplicated allergy pattern.

Track where and when symptoms flare so trigger control is targeted. Measures may include washing bedding regularly, reducing indoor dust reservoirs, addressing visible damp or mould, showering after heavy outdoor exposure and keeping smoke away from living areas.

Saline nasal rinsing can remove allergens, but use sterile or appropriately treated water and keep the device clean. Correct technique makes prescribed nasal sprays more effective: aim slightly outwards, away from the nasal septum, and avoid forceful sniffing. Never place an unlabelled oil or powder inside the nose.

Book an assessment when symptoms disturb sleep, work or school, remain troublesome despite correct treatment, or are accompanied by recurrent facial pressure, reduced smell, ear symptoms or a chronic cough. The clinician can check the diagnosis, spray technique and whether allergy testing is useful.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, rapidly worsening wheeze, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. These features go beyond routine nasal allergy and may represent a severe allergic reaction or an asthma flare.
