What should you know about autoimmune hair thinning?

It may appear as sharply defined patches, broader loss or changes involving eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair. Appearance alone cannot establish the cause because pattern hair loss, shedding after illness and scalp disorders can overlap.

A dermatologist examines the distribution of loss, the scalp surface and hairs at the edge of affected areas. They may also ask about rapid shedding, nail changes, family history, recent illness, medicines and other autoimmune conditions.

Testing depends on the findings. Magnified scalp examination may clarify the hair pattern, while blood tests can check for selected medical contributors when the history suggests them. Occasionally, a small scalp sample is needed when the diagnosis remains uncertain.

Arrange a dermatology visit rather than starting several hair products at once. Photograph the same scalp areas in similar lighting, note when loss began and list recent infections, major stressors, dietary changes, medicines and supplements. Bring details of any itching, scaling, tenderness or broken hairs.

Use gentle hair care while waiting: avoid tight styles, repeated pulling, harsh chemical processing and forceful brushing. Treatment is matched to the diagnosis and extent of loss; options intended for common pattern thinning do not necessarily address an immune-driven process.

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden extensive loss, scalp pain, pus, marked redness, fever, open sores or scarring. Rapid eyebrow or eyelash loss, or hair loss accompanied by unexplained fatigue, weight change, joint symptoms or a new rash, also deserves timely evaluation.

Get urgent help if a new medicine is followed by facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a widespread blistering rash. These symptoms require immediate attention regardless of the hair change.

Ask which diagnosis fits the pattern, whether any tests are appropriate, what treatment is intended to achieve and how progress will be judged. Also discuss side effects, scalp care, cosmetic camouflage and what change should trigger an earlier follow-up.
