Understanding androgenetic hair loss in males

Short answer

Male androgenetic hair loss is inherited, hormone-responsive follicle miniaturisation that usually causes gradual thinning at the hairline, temples, or crown.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the term describes

It is also called male pattern hair loss. Susceptible follicles spend less time producing robust shafts and eventually make shorter, finer hairs. This does not mean poor hygiene, and the visible pattern by itself does not establish an abnormal hormone level.

What the pattern can and cannot show

Gradual temple recession, movement of the frontal hairline, or an enlarging area of reduced crown density fits the condition. The sides and back often retain stronger coverage. A clinician may look closely for mixed shaft diameters, the distribution of fine hairs, scarring, inflammation, and evidence of regrowth.

Male pattern hair loss commonly presents with patterned thinning, but hair loss can also arise from telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, traction, scalp ringworm, or other scalp disease. Sudden diffuse shedding, circular smooth patches, scaling, pustules, or snapped hairs therefore require a broader assessment rather than being attributed to androgens automatically.

Choosing a sensible plan

Start by recording the hairline, top, and crown with consistent photographs. During assessment, describe the pace of change, scalp symptoms, recent illnesses, eating pattern, family history, and medicines. This information helps determine whether the loss is purely patterned or has an additional cause.

No treatment is required solely because the pattern exists. If you want intervention, discuss medical options, cosmetic camouflage, close cutting, or hair restoration according to your goals. Finasteride may be considered for suitable men after discussion of contraindications and possible adverse effects. Treatment decisions should also account for continued use and how progression will be monitored.

Signs that merit medical review

Arrange a timely appointment if loss accelerates, spreads in distinct patches, affects eyebrows or body hair, or comes with pain, intense itch, scale, crust, discharge, or shiny scar-like skin. These features can accompany conditions needing different treatment.

If a hair treatment is followed by swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, collapse, or a severe widespread rash, seek urgent help. Contact the prescriber for new breast changes, sexual symptoms, low mood, dizziness, or other troublesome effects so they can give treatment-specific advice.

Build a plan with your clinician

Ask which visible or microscopic features point to androgenetic loss, whether another diagnosis could coexist, and what change is achievable in each affected area. Confirm how to apply or take treatment, what follow-up comparison will be used, which effects require contact, and how the plan changes if thinning progresses.

Questions people ask

Is all hair loss at the crown androgenetic?

No. Crown thinning is a typical presentation of male pattern hair loss, but distribution, shaft changes, scalp condition, and history are assessed before assigning the cause.

Can wearing a hat cause male pattern hair loss?

Routine hat use does not create inherited follicle sensitivity. Very tight or repeatedly pulling headwear can stress hairs mechanically, which is a different process.

Can finasteride restore every lost hair?

No outcome can be promised. The aim may be to slow further loss, preserve susceptible follicles, and improve density in some areas; response varies between people and scalp regions.
