Allergic rhinitis with a deviated nasal septum

How the structures involved in Allergic Rhinitis differ from normal

Short answer

Allergic rhinitis inflames the nasal lining, while a deviated nasal septum narrows airflow structurally; treating the allergy may ease symptoms even though it does not straighten the septum.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the two problems interact

Allergic rhinitis can cause sneezing, itching, a runny nose and swelling inside both nasal passages after exposure to triggers such as dust mites, pollen or animal dander. A deviated nasal septum, often shortened to DNS, means the wall dividing the nose sits off centre. When allergy-related swelling develops in an already narrow passage, blockage may feel stronger on one side. Mouth breathing, disturbed sleep, reduced smell or facial pressure can accompany persistent obstruction, but these symptoms can have other causes too.

Ways to reduce symptoms

Notice where and when symptoms flare, then reduce avoidable exposure to the likely trigger. Saline nasal rinsing can clear allergens and mucus; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water and keep the device clean. A clinician or pharmacist can explain correct use of an antihistamine or corticosteroid nasal spray. Aim the spray slightly outward, away from the septum, and use it consistently as directed. Decongestant sprays can cause rebound blockage when overused, so check the label and seek professional guidance. If obstruction remains troublesome after allergy control, an ear, nose and throat assessment can clarify whether the septum or another nasal problem needs treatment.

When medical assessment matters

Arrange a routine appointment if blockage disrupts sleep, repeatedly affects daily activities, remains mainly one-sided, or does not improve with correctly used allergy treatment. Seek prompt care for swelling around an eye, severe facial pain, high fever, repeated heavy nosebleeds or worsening symptoms after a nasal injury. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, as these can signal a serious allergic reaction.

Useful questions for your appointment

Ask whether your examination suggests allergy-related swelling, structural narrowing, sinus inflammation or a combination. You can also ask for a demonstration of nasal-spray technique, advice on identifying triggers, and the signs that would justify referral to an allergy or ear, nose and throat specialist. Mention snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, reduced smell and any medicines already tried.

Questions people ask

Can allergy treatment fix a deviated septum?

No. It can reduce swelling and mucus around the narrowed passage, which may improve airflow, but it does not change the septum's shape.

Does everyone with allergic rhinitis and DNS need surgery?

No. Management depends on symptom burden, examination findings and response to allergy treatment. Structural treatment may be discussed when persistent obstruction meaningfully affects breathing or sleep.

Why can one nostril feel more blocked?

The septum may leave less space on one side, and swollen nasal tissue can narrow that passage further. The normal nasal cycle can also make congestion alternate.
