Short answer

COVID-19 is a viral respiratory infection that can cause cough, fever and fatigue, and urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty or severe illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Symptoms and recovery

COVID-19 can cause cough, fever, headache, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell. Symptoms vary between people and can range from mild to severe. A symptom on its own does not establish the cause, so consider exposure, timing and any test result together.

Some people have symptoms that continue or change after the acute infection; Long COVID is a term used for ongoing symptoms after COVID-19. COVID-19 can also be associated with complications such as pneumonia, which needs medical assessment when suspected.

What you can do

Stay home while you feel unwell where practical, rest, drink fluids, and follow current local public-health advice on testing and reducing contact with others. A clinician can help if symptoms are persistent, you have health conditions that increase concern, or you need advice on medicines.

Keep a note of the first day of symptoms, your temperature if measured, breathing changes, and any test results. This gives a clinician a clearer picture if you need to speak with them.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent medical care for shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or inability to keep fluids down. Children who are struggling to breathe, unusually floppy, or difficult to wake also need urgent assessment.

Questions to ask

Ask whether your symptoms need testing or examination, what warning signs apply to you, how to manage fever safely, and when it is appropriate to return to work, school or usual activities.

Questions people ask

Does a cough mean I have COVID-19?

A cough can occur with COVID-19, but it also has many other causes. Testing and clinical context can help clarify the cause.

When should I worry about pneumonia?

Seek prompt medical assessment for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, persistent fever, marked weakness, or a decline after initial improvement.
