Which specialist treats non-Hodgkin lymphoma?

Lymphoma care depends on the exact lymphoma type, where it is found and how quickly it is behaving. The haematology team reviews tissue or lymph-node results, scans and blood tests before recommending a plan. A pathologist identifies the lymphoma subtype; a medical oncologist may give chemotherapy or targeted therapy; and a clinical oncologist may plan radiotherapy. Swollen lymph nodes and night sweats can have causes other than lymphoma, so symptoms need proper assessment.

Ask for referral to a haematologist or haemato-oncologist, ideally through a team familiar with lymphoma. Bring scan reports, biopsy information, medicines and a timeline of symptoms. Your specialist may explain additional tissue testing, staging scans and treatment choices. Depending on the subtype and extent, care may include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy or active monitoring.

Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, confusion, sudden weakness, uncontrolled bleeding or a high fever. Contact the lymphoma team promptly if a swollen lymph node grows quickly, night sweats are drenching, or swallowing or breathing becomes difficult. These symptoms require clinical review and do not by themselves establish a lymphoma diagnosis.

Ask which lymphoma subtype has been identified, what further tests are needed, and who will coordinate the team. Discuss the purpose and timing of chemotherapy, targeted therapy or radiotherapy, likely short-term effects, and which changes should prompt an urgent call.
