Which specialist treats inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area in the groin. It may cause a bulge, dragging discomfort, or pain that changes with standing, coughing, lifting, or straining. A GP can examine the groin and abdomen, ask whether the lump reduces when you lie down, and decide whether imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound would add useful information.

A general surgeon manages surgical options. They consider the size and symptoms of the hernia, your health, work and activity demands, and whether the bulge can be gently reduced. Some hernias are monitored, while persistent symptoms or complications may lead to a repair discussion.

Arrange a GP consultation for a new groin lump, recurring discomfort, abdominal pain, or testicular pain. Note when the bulge appears and whether coughing or exercise changes it. Until assessed, avoid activities that clearly worsen pain and ask for personalised advice about lifting, constipation, and movement. Do not force a painful lump back into place.

Seek urgent medical help if a hernia becomes suddenly very painful, firm, discoloured, or cannot be pushed back when it previously reduced, especially with vomiting, a swollen abdomen, or inability to pass stool or gas. These signs can indicate trapped or obstructed tissue and should not wait for a routine referral.
