When should you see a doctor about facial pain and pressure?

Pressure around the cheeks, forehead, or nose with congestion and thick nasal mucus can occur with sinusitis. Ongoing congestion and facial discomfort may fit chronic sinusitis. Severe attacks with nausea or light sensitivity can occur with migraine, while intense one-sided pain around an eye with tearing or nasal symptoms can occur with cluster headache. Jaw, dental, eye, and nerve problems can also cause facial pain, so location and associated symptoms matter.

Record where the pain is, when it starts, how long each episode lasts, and whether congestion, headache, nausea, tooth pain, or visual symptoms accompany it. Rest, drink fluids, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you and taken according to its label. Avoid repeatedly taking different remedies without advice, especially if attacks are frequent.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe facial or head pain, weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, new vision loss, a swollen eye, or difficulty breathing. Fever with rapidly worsening facial swelling, severe illness, or pain after an injury also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether the pattern is more consistent with sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, migraine, or cluster headache; whether the teeth, eyes, or nerves need checking; and which treatment or warning signs should guide follow-up.
