When is transvaginal ultrasound recommended for ovarian cysts?

A small probe placed gently in the vagina produces images of the ovaries and pelvis. The scan can help describe whether a cyst appears fluid-filled, has solid areas, has internal partitions, or has blood flow. These features help a clinician decide whether observation, repeat imaging, or further assessment is appropriate. An ultrasound finding does not by itself establish the cause of a cyst.
