What is loop excision of the cervix done with?

The procedure is also called LLETZ or LEEP. A speculum holds the vaginal walls apart, and the colposcope stays outside the body while magnifying and lighting the cervix. The clinician guides a fine wire loop across the area that needs removal; electrical energy passes through the loop to cut tissue and help control bleeding. Local anaesthetic is often used, although the setting and anaesthesia plan vary. The removed tissue can be sent for laboratory examination to clarify the changes and whether the edges have been fully removed.

Tell the clinic about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, pregnancy or a weakened immune system. Follow instructions about menstrual products, intercourse, swimming and strenuous activity after treatment. Light bleeding or watery discharge can occur while the cervix heals. Use the follow-up plan provided, because repeat cervical screening or another examination may be recommended to check healing and monitor future cervical health.

Contact the clinic urgently for bleeding that is heavy or does not settle, severe pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, dizziness or fainting. Severe symptoms during or after the procedure should not be attributed to normal healing without advice. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell the clinician before the procedure.

Ask why excision is recommended, how the colposcope and loop will be used, what anaesthetic is planned, when results are expected, and which activities to avoid during healing.
