What happens if chronic cough is not treated?

Repeated coughing can strain the chest and abdominal muscles, trigger headaches, cause hoarseness and lead to urine leakage in some people. It may interrupt sleep, exercise, conversations and meals. More importantly, the cough can be a sign of asthma, acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, nicotine dependence or another lung problem. Treating the cough alone may not address the trigger, so the pattern, medicines, smoking or vaping exposure and associated symptoms all matter.

Book an appointment if the cough persists or keeps returning. Your clinician may listen to your chest, review medicines and exposures, and decide whether tests such as a chest X-ray or spirometry are useful. Note when the cough occurs, whether it is dry or produces mucus, and what makes it worse. Avoid smoke and other known irritants, and do not start antibiotics or cough medicines without advice.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting or sudden confusion. Arrange prompt assessment for unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, night sweats or a cough that is rapidly worsening. Children, older adults and people with lung or heart disease may need earlier review.

Ask what causes are most relevant to your symptoms, whether you need a chest X-ray or spirometry, and which warning signs should prompt urgent help. Tell the clinician about smoking, vaping, reflux, allergies and every medicine you take.
