What are the symptoms of comedonal acne?

Open comedones are dark-tipped plugs at the surface of a pore; the colour comes from exposure to air, not dirt. Closed comedones are small, pale or skin-coloured bumps covered by a thin layer of skin. They commonly appear on the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, chest, or upper back. The area may feel uneven when you run a finger over it, but comedones are often not painful. Red, swollen, tender spots suggest inflammation or another acne pattern alongside the comedones.

Use a gentle cleanser and non-comedogenic moisturiser, and avoid squeezing or scraping the plugs because this can irritate the follicle and leave marks. A clinician may recommend a gradual topical retinoid routine; an acne extraction facial or chemical peel may be considered for selected cases. Introduce one active product at a time and stop if severe irritation develops.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if bumps persist despite consistent gentle care, spread to the trunk, or become painful, red, or scar-like. Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly worsening swelling, marked warmth, pus, or fever, since those features do not fit simple, non-inflamed comedones.
