What are the first signs of uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the muscle of the uterus. Some cause no symptoms, while others affect bleeding or press on nearby organs. A fibroid near the uterine cavity can make periods unusually heavy or prolonged; a larger growth may cause fullness, pelvic pressure, lower back discomfort, or more frequent urination. Symptoms can develop gradually, so a change from your usual cycle is worth describing even if it is not severe. Heavy periods can also lead to tiredness from iron deficiency, which needs separate assessment.

Track bleeding, pain, cycle timing, clots, pressure and urinary changes for a few weeks. Arrange a gynaecology appointment if the pattern persists, affects daily activities, or makes pregnancy difficult. The clinician may ask about your cycle and examine your abdomen or pelvis, then use ultrasound to look at the uterus. Treatment depends on symptoms, fibroid position and future pregnancy plans; options may include medicines, a hormonal coil, myomectomy or other procedures.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that soaks through protection repeatedly, faintness, severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, or a possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Otherwise, book routine care for new heavy periods, persistent pelvic pain, ongoing bloating, or trouble getting pregnant. These symptoms have several possible causes, so they do not by themselves confirm fibroids.
