What are the first signs of asthma?

The first signs of asthma are often recurring wheezing, cough, chest tightness or shortness of breath, especially after triggers or at night. Symptoms can vary from one episode to another and may be more noticeable during exercise, with a cold, or around allergens.

Asthma involves sensitive, inflamed airways that narrow temporarily and make it harder to move air. Wheezing may sound like a whistle, while a cough can be the main symptom, particularly overnight or early in the morning. Symptoms that recur in particular places, seasons or after smoke, dust, pets or exercise can provide useful clues. These features do not prove asthma because infections and other airway conditions can cause similar symptoms.

Record when symptoms happen, what you were doing, possible triggers and how long they last. Book an assessment if episodes recur or interfere with sleep, activity or school or work. A clinician may arrange Spirometry, review allergies and discuss an inhaler plan. Avoid smoke and known irritants while waiting, but do not stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, confusion, exhaustion, or symptoms that rapidly worsen.
