What are the alternatives to myomectomy?

Short answer

Alternatives to myomectomy include medicines, uterine artery embolisation, radiofrequency ablation, and hysterectomy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How alternatives differ

Treatment is guided by fibroid size, number, and position, the symptoms they cause, and whether you hope to become pregnant. Medicines can reduce heavy periods or pain, but they may not remove fibroids. Uterine artery embolisation reduces blood flow to fibroids so they shrink; it is performed through a blood vessel rather than by removing each fibroid.

Radiofrequency fibroid ablation uses heat to treat fibroid tissue, with the exact approach depending on the device and fibroid location. Hysterectomy removes the uterus and ends the possibility of carrying a pregnancy. Robotic surgery describes a way of performing an operation, not a separate treatment goal, and it may be used for selected procedures.

Choosing a route

List your main priority: controlling heavy periods, easing pelvic pain, preserving fertility, avoiding major surgery, or treating pressure symptoms. Bring details of bleeding, pain, bladder or bowel pressure, and previous scans. Your gynaecologist may use imaging to map the fibroids and explain which treatments can reach them safely.

Ask how each option affects the uterus, recovery, recurrence, and future pregnancy. If symptoms are mild, monitoring may be reasonable. If bleeding is affecting daily life or causing tiredness, arrange assessment rather than self-treating for prolonged periods.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for very heavy or prolonged bleeding, dizziness, fainting, worsening pelvic pain, or a new abdominal swelling. Urgent care is appropriate for severe pain with vomiting, collapse, or bleeding that makes you feel unwell. Pregnancy with pain or bleeding also needs timely clinical assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Which fibroid is causing my symptoms? Can medicine control them, and for how long? Is embolisation or radiofrequency ablation suitable if I want a future pregnancy? What would hysterectomy change? How might treatment affect recurrence and recovery?

Questions people ask

Can fibroids be treated without surgery?

Medicines and monitoring can help some people, but they do not suit every fibroid or symptom pattern. Your scan and goals guide the choice.

Does hysterectomy remove fibroids?

Yes. It removes the uterus, so fibroids cannot recur in the uterus, but it also ends the ability to carry a pregnancy.
