The choice depends on the grade and position of abnormal cells, whether the entire area can be seen, biopsy results, and whether there is concern for an invasive cancer. Some cervical dysplasia can be monitored with repeat testing and colposcopy when the clinical team considers immediate removal unnecessary.

Colposcopy uses a magnified view of the cervix to guide inspection and biopsy. A colposcope stays outside the body; samples can still cause brief cramping or spotting. Cone biopsy removes a cone-shaped section and may be preferred when abnormal cells extend higher into the cervical canal or a larger, deeper specimen is needed.

Your clinician will also consider future pregnancy. Cervical procedures can affect the amount of cervical tissue, and cervical insufficiency is one issue your team may discuss when weighing treatment choices.

Ask which cells were found, whether they are visible in full, and whether a biopsy has ruled out a more serious problem. Confirm the timing of repeat testing if monitoring is offered. Tell the clinician about pregnancy plans, previous cervical procedures, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after sex.

After a cervical biopsy or procedure, contact the clinic for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, or an unpleasant-smelling discharge. Seek prompt assessment for bleeding after sex that keeps recurring, especially if it is new or accompanied by pelvic pain.
