What Are the Alternatives to IVF?

Some couples try timed intercourse when ovulation is predictable and sperm and fallopian-tube findings are reassuring. Ovulation medicines can help release an egg when ovulation is irregular, including with polycystic ovary syndrome; monitoring is usually used to guide timing and reduce the chance of an overly strong response.

Intrauterine insemination places prepared sperm inside the uterus around ovulation. It may be considered when the sperm needs help reaching the egg, when ovulation treatment alone has not helped, or when testing has not found a clear explanation. If a fallopian tube is blocked or filled with fluid, treatment of that problem may need to come first. Surgery can sometimes address a structural cause, but its suitability depends on the findings and fertility goals.

ICSI is not a general replacement for IVF: it is a laboratory fertilisation method used as part of an IVF cycle when there is a specific reason to inject a single sperm into an egg. Embryo transfer is the step of placing an embryo in the uterus, so it also belongs to an IVF pathway rather than being an independent alternative.

Start with a fertility evaluation for both partners where relevant. It commonly reviews ovulation, ovarian reserve, the uterus and tubes, and semen. Your clinician can then match treatment to the finding, your age and reproductive plans, how long you have been trying, previous treatment, and your preferences. Ask what each option is intended to address, how monitoring works, and when a change in plan would be sensible. Do not start fertility medicines without a prescription and a monitoring plan.

Arrange an assessment if pregnancy has not occurred after a period of trying, or sooner if periods are absent or very irregular, there is known tubal or uterine disease, previous pelvic infection or surgery, repeated pregnancy loss, or a concern about sperm. Seek urgent medical help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, or marked abdominal swelling during fertility treatment.
