What should you know about walking pneumonia?

The phrase usually refers to pneumonia with symptoms mild enough that someone may continue ordinary activities. It is still an infection affecting the lungs, and symptoms can include a persistent Cough, Fever, Chills, tiredness, headache, or breathlessness. Some people cough up phlegm, while others have a dry cough.

Pneumonia can have different causes, including bacteria and viruses. COVID-19 and Influenza can cause respiratory illness with overlapping symptoms, so symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. The condition can become more serious in older adults, young children, pregnant people, or people with heart, lung, or immune problems.

A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels, and decide whether further testing or treatment is needed. Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoking, and use medicines only as directed.

Urgent assessment is also needed when a person with pneumonia becomes unusually drowsy or develops signs that could indicate Sepsis.
